High-end disk maker Samsung Electronics announced Nov. 25 that it is beginning to produce 25GB and 50GB solid-state drives for performance-optimized server applications, such as video on demand, Web serving and online transaction processing.
The announcement came from the company’s Eschborn, Germany, semiconductor fabricator.
The new SLC (single-level cell) SSDs have about twice the random write performance of its standard 32GB and 64GB SLC SSDs, yet use less power, Samsung said.

The more efficiently designed SSDs use a mere 1.25 watts of power in active mode and 0.3 watts in idle mode-25 percent less than a standard 2.5-inch, 15000 rpm SAS spinning disk. Because the solid-state drives run so much cooler, they also ease the aggregate heat strain on a data center air conditioning system.
The Samsung’s 2.5-inch Enterprise SSDs can process about 100 times the number of IOPS per watt as a typical 15000 rpm, 2.5-inch SAS HDD (hard disk drive) and five times the number of IOPS per dollar as a 10000 rpm, 2.5-inch SCSI HDD, Samsung claimed.
The SATA 3GB per second drives read data sequentially at 100MB per second and write it at 80MB per second.
The new SSDs will be available worldwide by the end of November.
