With the nation on alert, we thought lucrative IT-related security jobs would be at a premium. We were wrong. A quick check of 6FigureJobs.com revealed only 17 security-related positions for IT consultants. By contrast, IT consultants who have ERP (37) or Oracle (43) experience appear to be in greater demand.
No Job Security?
Many service providers, such as Exodus Communications, attempted to move beyond their basic data-center practices and pushed aggressively into the security consulting field. But those initiatives have yet to pay any major dividends. Few customers are willing to outsource their security operations to money-losing service providers. Exodus, for one, was nearing bankruptcy as this article went to press.
Elsewhere, companies like Cap Gemini Ernst & Young and Pricewater- houseCoopers have IT security practices of their own. But getting your foot in the door isnt easy. Most major IT consulting firms require job candidates to undergo background checks and drug tests. Weve even heard of cases where recruiters asked job applicants to take "optional" lie detector tests. "I know of one case where a candidate had to visit a hypnotist to check for repressed lies," quips a source at Cap Gemini.
