EMC Acquires Acartus, Adds to Its Archiving Strategy

EMC Corp. is adding to its information archiving arsenal again, this time by acquiring Acartus Inc., an enterprise report management vendor.

Acartus, a privately held company based in Fort Collins, Colo., develops programs for archiving business reports, statements and billings.

The company offers solutions in several areas, including digital archival standards, distribution, legacy archive replacement, mining, transaction data archival, ECM (enterprise content management) integration and lifecycle managed report archives.

This weeks acquisition is just the latest in a series of acquisitions designed to bolster its data archiving offerings.

Just last week, Hopkinton, Mass.-based EMC Corp. announced that it was acquiring Building Captiva Software Corp. of San Diego, Calif., an input management software vendor that develops technology that helps convert paper-based information to digital formats.

The announcement, made at EMCs Momentum 2005 in Las Vegas, is another indication that EMC is developing a stronger information archiving and retention solution.

Today, many of the files, images, documents, records, reports, forms, databases and specific enterprise application information are archived in separate, disconnected systems, said Dave DeWalt, president of EMC Software, at the conference.

“The negative business impact of not efficiently and accurately managing, retaining, securing and retrieving this information is measurable,” he said.

“For example, a companys ability to respond in short order to legal inquiries depends largely on its underlying archive and retrieval systems. For that reason, EMC has embarked on a strategy to eliminate the complexity of disconnected archiving silos.”

DeWalt noted that EMCs acquisition of Acartus will help the company achieve this goal because its report management technology, integrated with the EMC Documentum software and EMC Centera content-addressed storage platforms, will better meet the needs or organizations with large-scale archiving requirements.

The acquisitions of Acartus and Captiva, along with EMCs Archive Services for SAP and other EMC archiving products, are all part of EMCs evolving archiving strategy, DeWalt said.
