VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Brian “Redbeard” Harrington came to the OpenStack Summit here with a mission to explain how CoreOS and container technology work with OpenStack to enable a high-performance, secure cloud.

CoreOS builds a Linux operating system distribution that is optimized for container delivery. On April 6, the company announced that it had raised $12 million in new funding, with total funding now standing at $20 million.

In a video interview with eWEEK, Harrington explains the intersection of CoreOS’ technologies and OpenStack.

One area where CoreOS plays a role is with the OpenStack Ironic bare metal project. Harrington explained that Rackspace and Hewlett-Packard did a lot of work using a bare metal machine that is running CoreOS in RAM to help enable OpenStack deployment.

Security is a key area of focus for CoreOS, from the hardware all the way through running code.

“We want to be able to have you take a machine where you trust the actual hardware, boot into a trusted operating system and take that all the way up to trusted signed code,” Harrington said.
