VANCOUVER, B.C.—Cisco is one of the leading participants in the open-source OpenStack ecosystem and is also helping encourage others to participate. At the OpenStack Summit here, Lew Tucker, vice president and CTO of cloud computing at Cisco, discussed the company’s cloud efforts, including OpenStack and intercloud, in a video interview with eWEEK.

Cisco first officially joined the OpenStack effort in 2011, during the OpenStack Bexar release cycle. Tucker currently serves as vice chairman on the OpenStack Foundation’s board of directors.

While Cisco is directly contributing to OpenStack in multiple ways, it has helped others, in particular media giant Comcast, adopt OpenStack and become active in the open-source community. In April 2013 at the OpenStack Portland summit, Comcast delivered a keynote about its OpenStack efforts. Now in May 2015 at the OpenStack Vancouver summit, Comcast once again made it onto the keynote stage, both to discuss its efforts and to receive an OpenStack SuperUser award for its contributions to the platform.

“It’s a great example of how to work in a co-development model with a customer,” Tucker said. “We worked with them [Comcast], and we transitioned very early from Cisco will do everything for you to Cisco will help you to become a participant.”

Tucker added that Cisco helped Comcast develop and up-stream code they needed to the OpenStack community. Tucker noted that a lot of IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) work in OpenStack now comes from Comcast.
