LAS VEGAS—EMC’s store-bought cloud, Virtustream, revealed Aug. 29 that it plans to integrate the VMware NSX network virtualization platform into its enterprise cloud.

This is a good thing for enterprises considering an alternative to AWS, Azure or Google Cloud because Virtustream, a member of the vCloud Air Network, didn’t have anything like VMware’s industry-standard, enterprise-ready platform.

The announcement was another in a list of similar cooperation news items that will become more common as the merger of Dell and EMC continues to wind its way through international regulatory approvals. Finalization of the merger is expected by October, Michael Dell said Aug. 29 at VMworld 2016.

EMC will work with VMware to establish Virtustream’s Enterprise Cloud as an endpoint for VMware vRealize Suite, designed for users within a software-defined data center architecture, or as part of EMC Enterprise Hybrid Cloud.

Initiatives like this one will further integrate solutions from across EMC, Virtustream and VMware to help users better leverage hybrid cloud as part of their digital transformation initiatives by adding connections from on-premises infrastructure to Virtustream’s Enterprise Cloud, an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) solution designed for mission-critical applications.

Later this year, users will be able to extend their VMware NSX environments seamlessly into Virtustream’s Enterprise Cloud, VMware said. VMware NSX provides a complete set of logical networking elements and services, including logical switching, routing, firewalling, load balancing, VPN, quality of service (QoS) and monitoring. Virtual networks are programmatically provisioned and managed independently from the underlying hardware.

Additionally, users leveraging VMware vRealize Suite to manage hybrid clouds will be able to deploy into Virtustream’s Enterprise Cloud as a public cloud endpoint, providing easy access to Virtustream’s robust, high-performance enterprise-class IaaS for their mission-critical applications, while maintaining a single control panel for infrastructure management.
