eWEEK has written often about “control of the data” as being IT’s biggest challenge as enterprises roll into the new year awash with huge data stores to process, protect and secure.
The reasons for this deluge are the familiar ones: more Internet data in general, a preponderance of higher-quality video and graphics, more mobile devices to create data, enterprise people and machines churning out increasing amounts of business data on a 24/7 basis, and legislation around the globe requiring businesses to maintain years of data for compliance and legal reasons.
Data control application providers are in a good place right now; demand is way up. One of them is data center infrastructure management provider ManageEngine, which is now offering storage monitoring as a new feature of its unified IT management package.
Company Has Loyal Customers
Pleasanton, Calif.-based ManageEngine, not well known in the general IT community but a company with a staunch global following — mostly in financial services, health care, government and media — after 13 years in the data center infrastructure management (DCIM) business, calls its platform IT360. With the addition of storage monitoring, its unified dashboard now offers preintegrated, out-of-the-box support for multi-vendor storage systems.
“We’re able to collect an enterprise’s data through interdependencies,” ManageEngine President Raj Sabhlok told eWEEK. “Our software sits inside a Windows box and is agentless. We are able to find and account for all the data within an organization and enable users to take complete control of it.

IT360 dashboard provides a 360-degree view across an IT system to proactively monitor performance, Sabhlok said. It is designed not only to monitor and manage IT infrastructures but also to add a business context to monitoring IT resources to help the various stakeholders understand the impact of down times on the business.
Monitors All Key Data Center Metrics
IT360 monitors network, server, and application and database performance and end-user experience management for IT operations. It also has an Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) help desk for IT service management, all in the same product.
“Data center infrastructure management is a hot topic, thanks to the rise in private cloud computing fueling data center growth,” Sabhlok said. “The private cloud and data center activity, however, has yet to spark corresponding advances in DCIM software. Simply put, discrete DCIM point solutions can’t provide the unified, real-time views needed to optimize the management of data center infrastructures.
“That’s why we engineered everything together into one product. It’s too hard to deal with numerous point products when controlling a data center or other IT system,” he said.

The latest version of IT360 supports multivendor storage area network (SAN) and network-attached storage (NAS) solutions for storage devices such as storage arrays, fabric switches, tape libraries, host servers and host bus adapter cards.
