Linux Users Have Luxury of Choosing From Diverse Desktop Options

The open-source Linux operating system is widely deployed on enterprise server infrastructure, but it also has a place on the desktop, as well. While many in the Linux community have long speculated on when "The Year of the Linux Desktop" would finally arrive, the reality is that there is no single such entity as THE Linux Desktop. The Linux desktop ecosystem is diverse, with multiple options and choices to suit different user needs and user preferences. Open-source Linux desktops can also be vendor-agnostic and can be deployed across any number of different Linux operating system distributions. The big enterprise Linux distributions tend to offer the GNOME Linux desktop as the default choice, but it's not the only one. In fact, GNOME itself is now somewhat fractured with multiple desktop environment options and derivatives, including GNOME Shell, GNOME Classic, Unity, Mate and Cinnamon. Looking beyond GNOME-based Linux desktops, KDE, XFCE and LXDE also provide interesting options for users to consider.

I have used MS OSs and several Linux Distros over the years and feel all are less than perfect, but with the ever increasing costs of MS products, I wonder why more aren't switching to open-source counter-parts. I dual boot MS and Mint. For me Mint is more refreshing, not to mention less of a resource hog. Bottom line, don't knock it without trying it first.

I feel sorry for all those windows users that are stuck with "Metro". I have several computers and use different Linux versions and desktops each geared to a different purpose. I even get requests from friends to "turn their GUI back to XP or Classic". You would think Microsoft would get the message.

A reply to Daci is why does Linux users always bash Windows? Anything has its problems and bashing doesn't help anything. People need to use a system that works for them and they like and stop with the bashing. IT Technology is getting like politics where the other side can never anythign right and we don't need that Bias nonsense in technolgy.

If anyone asks me about Linux, my usual response is "Which one?" Put aside the specialized distros for drive cloning, forensics, firewall appliance, network storage appliance. These make perfectly good sense. But it seems to me that there are way too many egos and vested interests pushing way too many distros and user interfaces and Linux spins. In short, the fact that Linux is so fractured explains by and large why it has achieved such limited success on the desktop. Why, just go to Distrowatch and read the abstracts for new releases. These abstracts almost all rely on the same trite phrases to describe the software. Nowhere is there a cogent analysis of why one would choose among Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon, Mate, LXDE as UIs. This is the age-old problem of offering too many choices to confuse the decision-maker. I'd rather have the choice of a distro/UI or two that operate like Windows and a couple that work like the Mac OS, and leave it at that.

@Bill Myers. Just imagine if windows was open source how many different distributions there would be. that would upset you. Stick with windows then you won't have a problem deciding what to do. the lord and master will tell you what to do

I confirm. I switched to Linux 3 years ago after using windows for more than 10 years. everything is working like a charm for me with Linux. Alternative desktop environments is an advantage. it gives the user a choice .. and I love that.
