Cloud storage and automated backup provider Sterling Data Storage, which is carving out a niche in the Web hosting sector, on Jan. 14 launched three new cloud backup services for small and midsize enterprises in that burgeoning market.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Sterling makes software-as-a-service-based (SaaS-based) backup and disaster recovery software for Windows, Linux and iOS systems.

In Sterling’s automated backup schema, data is transferred using streaming Delta IT and Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV), an extension of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), to ensure safe movement of large data packets, which are encrypted prior to the data transfer.

Data and file backup and disaster recovery are requisite value-added services for Web hosting companies to provide for their customers for security purposes and for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Sarbanes-Oxley and American Bar Association standards.

“Even though cloud backup has seen slower adoption rates for small to medium-size corporations, new affordable technology and advances in cloud computing appliances have shown increased adoption rates among IT service providers and businesses required to meet compliance and regulatory requirements,” said Sterling CEO Jim Morand. “The increased economies of scale, better control, increased security, expanding backup options and minimized cost structures have made cloud backup solutions an increasingly reliable and accepted technology for business data storage.”

Sterling currently offers its cloud backup software on a free 30-day trial basis.
