The Fujitsu Lifebook U772 is among the first Ultrabook devices to offer a large HDD with SSD cache in a thin (.69” profile) and weighing in at 3.15 pounds without the power cord, which adds 9.7 (or just about 20%) to the overall weight.
The Lifebook U772, a new addition to Fujitsu’s laptop lineup started shipping in mid-June and starts at $1,149 with an Intel Core i5 processor. As tested with an upgraded Intel Core i7 processor and 128 GB solid state drive the system priced out at $1,679 at the Fujitsu online store. The 45 Wh battery is rated for 7 hours of use and is not user serviceable.
During testing at eWEEK Labs the Lifebook U772 chiclet keyboard got mixed reactions. The keyboard has a shallow key press action compared to most standard-size laptops and button presses on the trackpad were stiff. Also, the single fan exhaust landed squarely on top of my left leg when I used the system while commuting. For short trips this wasn’t a problem. I didn’t use the system for long periods of time without a table.
On the plus side the 14-inch frameless WXGA HD Crystal View display delivered bright edge-to-edge viewing. The display panel on my test system had a tendency to wobble, which detracted from the overall good fit-and-finish of the product.
The Lifebook U772 comes with a host of security features including some that come with the Intel vPro processor, including the TPM (Trusted Platform Module). The system also has a biometric fingerprint sensor, Intel Anti-Theft Technology, Computrace BIOS Persistence Module, BIOS and HDD password protection and a Kinsington lock slot.
Competitors include ultraportable systems from Lenovo, Sony, Dell and Asus. You can read more about the initial Lifebook U772 release here.
