LAS VEGAS—EMC, which has owned the storage hardware and software market for the last decade but faces stiff challenges as enterprise-level cloud storage services cut into its business, introduced several new hybrid cloud-related products on Day 1 of its EMC World conference here at the Venetian.
To reach out to more midrange companies, the Hopkinton, Mass.-based corporation unveiled a new software-defined storage appliance that combines the attributes of the public and private cloud for service providers and enterprise customers of any industry and of any size.
The EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) appliance, which borrows directly from the name Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud that Amazon Web Services chose eight years ago for its online software development platform, is a hyperscale cloud storage backbone that offers the agility and cost benefits of a public cloud to go with the control and security benefits of an on-premises private cloud.
The ECS Appliance is a modular, scale-out data center package that can hold up to 2.9 petabytes of data in a single rack. If necessary, it can be clustered to achieve exabyte scale, EMC claimed.
The appliance enables users to keep much of the legacy data center servers and storage because it adds hyperscale cloud capabilities to existing private and hybrid cloud environments. It features self-service capabilities, fully automated provisioning and data services for next-generation applications.
EMC also unveiled several other new storage-related products on Day 1 of the three-day conference, headlined by the following:
–A 2.0 version of the ViPR Software-Defined Storage Platform, designed to automate the management of both existing and new storage infrastructures and provide new data services to support next-generation applications and big data analytics. ViPR 2.0 plugs into higher-level management and orchestration tools from VMware, OpenStack and Microsoft so storage can be a part of broader data center workflows. It also adds new block data services and new geographic replication and distribution.
–The new EMC Data Domain DD2200 features a protection storage system with enterprise-class benefits that has been intentionally designed, priced and optimized for midmarket customers. It will be delivered through EMC’s global network of channel partners.
