Storage provider SGI has joined a long list of IT companies that are taking advantage of the big data analytics trend.
The Fremont, Calif.-based company revealed Oct. 1 that it has acquired FileTek, a global provider of big data storage virtualization, large-scale data management and archiving. Terms of the transaction, which closed Oct. 1, were not released.
FileTek fills gaps in and brings a new set of customers to SGI’s storage packages. SGI primarily has customers in sectors that include media/entertainment, government and life sciences.
“This acquisition brings some capabilities to both our customer bases that we couldn’t offer before, sort of a best-of-breed story,” SGI General Manager of Storage Bruce Elder told eWEEK. “We will now be able to deliver scalable—really, peta-scalable—data management in the active archiving space.”
Rockville, Md.-based FileTek, founded in 1984, is a true survivor in the IT world. It makes the StorHouse virtualized storage platform and the Trusted Edge intelligent content migration management software. It has been a pioneer provider of big data storage virtualization, large-scale data management and active archive solutions.
FileTek’s installed base includes major corporations, educational institutions, scientific research organizations and government agencies worldwide. Its products and services provide native file format backups of terabytes to petabytes of data residing on operational systems; digital preservation initiatives; active archive applications; database extension systems; and enterprise-wide records management and compliance programs.
SGI, once one of the world leaders in building and marketing high-end workstations, has also been a survivor in the IT storage business and has a number of 20-year-plus customers. It handles deployments scaling to more than 100 petabytes and nearly 2 billion files.
Elder told eWEEK that SGI will commit itself to FileTek’s customers and intends to provide “long-term stability, resources and structure for their continued success and growth.”
FileTek’s Trusted Edge software provides intelligent analysis of data assets held on heterogeneous primary storage and will bring automated, policy-based data migration to SGI InfiniteStorage Gateway products. StorHouse software adds enterprise information lifecycle management and active archiving for structured data, which complements SGI’s DMF technology for unstructured data, Elder said.
SGI will develop, sell and support Trusted Edge and StorHouse products under the SGI brand.
