President Bush just created a new position to advance the transition to electronic medical records. The official would be placed in the Department of Health and Human Services, and would be largely responsible for coordinating the public-private partnerships necessary to get health care systems across the country to use compatible standards and methods.

Establishing electronic health records will not be fast, Bush said, stating that the goal is to establish systems within a 10-year time frame. But, he said, “By introducing information technology, the health care will be better, the cost will go down, the quality will go up.”
