IEEE Approves Japanese Wi-Fi Standard

The IEEE standards committee has approved the 802.11j standard, which will allow compliant North American Wi-Fi components to interoperate with similar devices in Japan.

The 4.9- and 5.0-GHz frequency bands, which are unlicensed spectrum in Japan was an issue because, in the U.S., the 4.9-GHz spectrum band is used for public safety radio deployments and would, potentially, cause interference.

The new standard allows the 802.11 network to adapt to a new frequency, alternatively changing the channel width to increase network performance or user capacity.
