Wireless industry pioneer Craig McCaw this week launched a new company aimed at providing fixed wireless service nationwide.

Clearwire Inc. will provide non-line-of-sight broadband wireless service that will compete directly against cable and DSL providers, said company officials in Kirkland, Wash. Previous fixed wireless offerings have required line-of-sight connections between radios, which has hampered services.

Clearwire will begin offering commercial services in Jacksonville, Fla. and St. Cloud, Minn., this summer, with plans for other U.S. markets in the next year.

McCaw will serve as the companys chairman and CEO.
