PalmSource Inc. has released Palm OS 6.0 for next-generation devices and smart phones to its licensees.

The new software features the ability to multitask, as well as enhanced multimedia, better security, memory protection and a modular design framework. Developers will likely get a closer look at the new software at the Palm PalmSource developer conference next month.

Palm OS 6 will be part of PalmSources Mobile Business Architecture (MBA), code-named Sahara.

The Sahara framework will support AES and RC4 on the encryption side and signed code and passwords on the authentication side, PalmSource chief executive David Nagel said at the Cebit America trade show in New York last year. Sahara will also include better device management and messaging tools than are currently found in the Palm OS, he said.

“Palm OS 6 is a major milestone for PalmSource, and we are happy to deliver the final version on schedule,” said Larry Slotnick, chief products officer at PalmSource. “We believe that our team has developed a tremendous product for our licensees to bring innovative Palm Powered mobile products into new markets.”
