Symbol Technologies last week introduced two ruggedized handheld computers that support Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and wide-area wireless networks.

The Symbol MC9000-K and MC9000-S run the Windows Mobile 2003 or CE.Net operating systems on an Intel 400MHz XScale processor. Designed for beverage- and snack-route delivery people and field service technicians, they have imaging engines that can read bar codes omnidirectionally. Both devices can withstand 6-foot drops to concrete, windblown dust and rain. The devices include a jack for a headset, and speakerphone capability is expected within the year, said officials.

Pricing varies according to configuration. The devices are available now.
