The AI coding startup introduced Cursor Start on Monday, a ₹649-per-month (roughly $7) localized subscription tier designed specifically for Indian developers.
Sitting far below its standard $20 monthly Pro plan, the new tier targets one of the world's fastest-growing technology hubs, where the startup's user base has tripled over the past year.
The new plan is tailored directly to local market conditions, accepting Indian rupees via regional payment options like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
According to Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, India represents the company's third-largest global market and holds its highest concentration of power users.
"We felt that we had an opportunity there to right-size the commercial model and drive scale," Green told TechCrunch, highlighting the nation's vast engineering pool. GitHub estimates India hosts over 27 million developers, second only to the United States.
To deliver a plan at roughly a third of its global price tag, Cursor drew a strict line around its feature set:
- Included: Access to Cursor's in-house Composer 2.5 model, Grok 4.5, cloud agents, plugins, Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, hooks, skills, and its iOS app.
- Excluded: Advanced frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside premium tools like Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK.
Rather than operating as a loss leader, Green noted the ₹649 rate is commercially viable because it relies on internal architectures. Serving inference through Composer 2.5, which runs around $0.50 per million input tokens, significantly undercuts the costs of routing user prompts to expensive third-party frontier models like Claude Opus or GPT-5.5.
Beyond pure subscription volume, launching an affordable tier powered strictly by Cursor's proprietary stack creates a distinct structural advantage.
Grok 4.5 was jointly trained by Cursor and SpaceXAI using trillions of tokens of real-world user code, captures of multi-file edits, and intent-driven interactions. By funneling high volumes of Indian developer activity exclusively through its in-house and co-developed engines, Cursor establishes a continuous feedback loop.
This telemetry generates rich, real-world development data that actively trains and refines future models, turning low-cost access into a long-term algorithmic asset.
Business impact and enterprise outlook
As Cursor prepares for its $60 billion all-stock acquisition by Elon Musk's SpaceX to close in Q3, the startup is aggressively expanding its physical footprint. Cursor has placed its first salesperson in India, added technical support staff, and established a government affairs presence across tech hubs like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
