Microsoft is on the hunt for a new chief for its Microsoft Business Solutions (MBS) unit.

Senior Vice President, Business Solutions Business Group Doug Burgum, who has led MBS for the past five years—ever since Microsoft acquired Burgums Great Plains Software—is remaining with the company. But Burgum will move into a new role, serving as chairman of MBS, as soon as his replacement is found, Microsoft announced Thursday.

Burgum sent an e-mail notice to the MBS team on Thursday, apprising them of the upcoming transition.

“Given the strength and momentum of our business, this is the right time to initiate a thoughtful and well planned leadership transition,” wrote Burgum in his note, viewed by Microsoft Watch. “So this week we will begin a formal search for a new business group leader of MBS.”

Microsoft is hoping to have a new MBS senior vice president in place by Spring 2006, Burgum said.

Microsoft plans to look both inside and outside the company for its new MBS chief, Burgum said. Whoever assumes the new role will be based in Redmond, while Burgum will continue to be based in Fargo, N.D.
