I feel the need… the need for speed.

ChatGPT creator OpenAI has dropped news of a massive partnership that promises to deliver the fastest AI responses ever seen.

OpenAI announced on Jan. 14 an alliance with AI chip specialist Cerebras Systems to integrate 750 megawatts of ultra-low-latency computing power into its platform. Industry insiders familiar with the arrangement confirmed the deal carries a price tag exceeding $10 billion, according to CNBC sources. The computing capacity will roll out in multiple phases starting in 2026, with full implementation scheduled through 2028.

Behind closed doors

The alliance between these AI firms didn’t happen overnight. Cerebras confirmed that both companies have been collaborating behind the scenes since 2017, with teams meeting regularly to share research and development insights. This extended courtship period suggests the partnership represents a carefully orchestrated strategic move rather than a rushed response to market pressures.

Cerebras brings unique technology to the table with its Wafer-Scale Engines (WSEs)—processors that can deliver AI responses up to 15 times faster than traditional GPU-based systems. The chipmaker positions itself as a direct competitor to industry giant Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI hardware market. When fully deployed, Cerebras claims this will create the largest high-speed AI inference system globally.

For the users

The integration promises to transform how users experience AI interactions across all OpenAI products. When users submit complex queries, generate code, create images, or run AI agents, the response time could be dramatically reduced. Real-time AI responses encourage users to engage more frequently, stay on platforms longer, and tackle more sophisticated tasks.

Sachin Katti from OpenAI’s compute infrastructure team explained that faster responses enable more natural interactions and provide a stronger foundation for scaling real-time AI to larger audiences. OpenAI plans to gradually integrate this low-latency capacity into its inference processes, expanding across different workload types in phases. This approach aligns with OpenAI’s broader computing strategy of matching specialized systems to specific workload requirements.

Going public

This partnership arrives at a crucial time for Cerebras, which has been navigating the complex path to going public. The company filed for an IPO with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2024 but withdrew those plans in October 2025. Now, Bloomberg sources report that Cerebras is pursuing approximately $1 billion in new funding at a $22 billion pre-investment valuation.

This OpenAI deal represents a shift that could strengthen Cerebras’ position for future public market ambitions while validating its technology at the highest levels of AI development.

For an industry where milliseconds matter and users demand instant responses, this deal gives OpenAI a helpful boost in the intense AI race.

OpenAI is expected to return to the Super Bowl stage this year, with plans to air a 60-second commercial during NBC’s Super Bowl LX broadcast.
