The first nationwide snapshot of IT use in physician offices shows that nearly 60% of solo and small practices used information technology in one or none of several functions shown to improve quality of care. The survey is based on data from 2001; HSC (Center for Studying Health System Change), the non-partisan research group that conducted the survey, said rates in general have probably increased, but tendencies by practice setting are probably unchanged.

Large practices were 50% more likely to use IT to obtain treatment guidelines, exchange clinical data with other physicians, access patient notes, generate treatment reminders for the physicians use and write prescriptions.
