Marvell Releases Serial ATA II Controllers

Marvell Semiconductor Inc. last week released 3-gbps Serial ATA II host controllers, which can deliver twice the speed of current SATA technology. Marvell touted its new 88SX6081 (8-port) and 88SX6041 (4-port) Serial ATA II controllers as key components to enable the high-performance and cost-effective solutions for server RAID on motherboard (ROMB) implementations, RAID adapters, network attached storage, storage area networks and near-line storage arrays. “Serial ATA technology is already becoming a significant force in the development of lower-cost server and external disk storage systems, and is ramping in share as the market leaders in these spaces continue to introduce Serial ATA-based systems into their product lines,” said Sean Lavey, a semiconductor analyst with IDC. “The introduction of Serial ATA II-based silicon should accelerate this trend, as it provides critical performance improvements necessary for adoption in a wider range of enterprise environments.”

Hitachi Preps Heterogeneous Replication Solution

Hitachi Data Systems and Sun Microsystems Monday officially signaled that their relationship—under which Sun resells HDS Freedom Storage Lightning V Series arrays—will continue. In addition, HDS expects to unveil a heterogeneous data replication solution in the near future, according to an HDS spokesperson, who added that the company also plans to introduce offerings including its next generation of scalable storage architecture, a utility solution for “pay-as-you-grow” storage, new professional services aimed at compliance and data life cycles and a program for solution providers to deliver those services.

Ciena Pays $45 Million for Storage Networking Specialist Akara

Ciena Corp. last week announced its acquisition of storage networking company Akara Corp. for $45 million. For the past few years, designers have searched for a link between storage networks and metro rings. Akara attempted to bridge that gap by providing customer primes equipment boxes such as the OUSP 2000. These map FICON, ESCOM and Fibre Channel traffic onto Sonet, dark fiber and dense wave division multiplexing connections.
