Chris Preimesberger’s Sept. 4 story “Sandia’s Red Teams: On the Hunt for Security Holes” [or “Plugging Holes”] referred to “systems created in the 1950s and 1960s.”
I personally know of a Fortune 500 company that has a mission-critical application running on MS-DOS 6.22. That application will never get hacked because the baddies in this world are concentrating their efforts on [Microsoft] Windows XP and Vista and, to an increasing extent, Linux.
Lesson to be learned: Don’t be in a great rush to “update” any old DOS programs and applications; or, as my great-great-grandpappy used to say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”
