PHOENIX—Computer Associates International Inc. will unveil storage management technologies later this year based on the analogies of administering ordinary networks, chief technology officer Yogesh Gupta will announce Tuesday.

Although many companies have talked of similar visions, “the realization of that vision has some hurdles to overcome,” he said in an interview. These include creating uniform policy engines, security, availability, and quality-of-service, the Islandia, N.Y.-based Gupta said.

“Were working on delivering a solution for making it extremely easy to design a SAN infrastructure,” he said. That will go beyond CAs original plan to integrate its Netreon Inc. acquisition of earlier this year, he said.

“Were tying the SAN design with the SAN management aspect,” he explained. Also, “We are looking to offer solutions that basically deal with security of network-attached” storage, he said. Along with both NAS and SAN quality-of-service, the new products will all come in the second half of this year, he said, declining to state names.

The products will be integrated with CAs BrightStor portal, Gupta added. BrightStor itself will become more compliant with storage management standards like the Common Information Model.

“In all the other parts of the technology industry, standards have prevailed,” he noted. That will be true for future technologies where storage meets grid computing. CA is working on that in research and development, he said.
