SGI announced Dec. 11 the upcoming availability of the SGI InfiniteStorage 220 RAID system.
The InfiniteStorage 220 will provide businesses with critical storage tools such as data backup, disaster recovery and other file storage applications, with integrated software and a choice of SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) and SATA (Serial ATA) disk drives.
“The plug-and-play design of the SGI InfiniteStorage 220 storage solution makes high-performance RAID storage very accessible to any business and lowers costs during the life of the platform,” Kurt Kuckein, RAID product manager for SGI, based in Mountain View, Calif., said in a company release.

According to SGI, its new storage platform enables businesses to set up and use cost-effective RAID storage, and to automate and streamline tasks such as data protection and running diagnostics using Storage Management Interface software. Users can also install additional storage applications without having to shut down their workstations.
The platform also comes with a choice of between two to 48 drives, and features one or two controllers that can support up to 12 integrated disk drives and up to 36 additional drives.
“This newest addition to the SGI storage family broadens the choices and gives customers the ability to protect their current storage investments while integrating their choice of drives in a single enclosure,” Kuckein said.
The SGI InfiniteStorage 220 can be ordered now, for shipping in early 2007. The lowest cost of configuration will be less than $8,000.
