Veritas Software Corp. Tuesday announced new features for its NetBackup 4.5 software, focused on large-business use.

NetBackup 4.5 Feature Pack now has speedier recovery for snapshots, smarter attachment handling for Exchange mailboxes, and more options for disaster recovery reporting, officials said.

Snapshots on disks can now be accessed through metadata, versus having to load the whole image in prior versions, officials explained. That integrates with Veritas File System and Volume Manager products. Numerous startups are working on similar technology, but Veritas built its version in-house, officials noted.

For Exchange, NetBackup can now save just mailbox changes, and can now save just one copy of attachments that are located in multiple mailboxes, keeping it updated based on date and size policies, officials said.

New disaster recovery features, for the NetBackup Vault function, include reports that are compatible with Iron Mountain Inc.s reports. New reports for all users focus on snapshot integrity, to help users find flaws in their backup strategies, and on lost media, to better track tapes and backup disks, they said.

Another new feature is that NetBackups Global Data Manager dashboard for Windows now also administers the smaller-scale Backup Exec software, officials said.

NetBackup 4.5 Feature Pack is available now at $5,000 for Windows and Linux and $10,000 for UNIX. Also, version 5.0 is delayed from a summer release to a fall release, officials said.
