Hewlett-Packard has released a new Itanium 2-based workstation for designers of planes, trains and automobiles.

The company last week rolled out a new zx2000 workstation powered by one of Intels low-voltage DP (dual processor)- optimized Itanium 2 chips. That chip runs at 1.4GHz and offers 1.5MB of Level 3 cache.

The new single-processor workstation is designed for projects that need more than 2GB of physical memory, HP officials said. The system can handle product design tasks that require 8GB of memory, they said. The workstation runs on HP-UX 11i 2.0, Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 for Itanium and Windows XP 64-bit Edition 2003 operating systems. The product is available now, starting at $6,734.
