Hewlett-Packard Co. next month will begin shipping two workstations powered by Itanium 2 chips and featuring Microsoft Corp.s Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003.

The Palo Alto, Calif., companys zx2000 and zx6000 systems will be available to order on Thursday, and will ship two weeks later, according to an HP spokesperson.

Pricing for the one-processor zx2000, powered by a 1.5GHz Itanium 2 chip, ranges from $3,711 to $5,832. A one-processor zx6000 starts at $6,905, with a dual-processor version featuring a 900MHz chip and a API Radeon 700 graphics card starting at $7,439. A system with two 1GHz Itanium 2 and an NVidia Quadro 4 900 XGL graphics card starts at $15,135.

HP, which co-developed the Itanium chip with Intel Corp., of Santa Clara, Calif., is hoping that 64-bit computing featuring the chip and Microsoft Windows operating system will push server sales.

Currently HPs 64-way Superdome server is powered by its PA RISC 8700+ chip and runs HP-UX. The new version that will be powered by Itanium 2 will run Windows and Linux.
