Sybase Inc. on Tuesday announced that it has added support for Sun Microsystems Inc.s latest clustering software within its Adaptive Server Enterprise database to provide improved availability and service levels for customers running ASE on Solaris.

The support for Sun Cluster 3.0 provides Sybase ASE 12.5 with additional monitoring and failover capabilities. Sybase already supported clustering for Solaris with Suns previous version, Sun Cluster 2.2, and with Veritas Software Corp.s Veritas Cluster Server, said Rick Linden, Sybase product manager for enterprise solutions, in Dublin, Calif.

“This is not just to certify the OS and database can to work together,” he said. “We actually are taking cluster scripts that Solaris provides us and making sure that they work efficiently with our monitoring scripts within ASE and that provides more robust monitoring for the customer.”

Sun Cluster 3.0, a part of Suns SunPlex clustering platform, extends Solaris so that Solaris services, such as devices, file systems and networks, can be used across a tightly coupled cluster while maintaining full Solaris compatibilities for existing applications.

The combination of Sybase ASE with SunPlex, officials said, helps improve service levels by making recovery from failure transparent, simplifies management of the entire infrastructure and provides joint support from Sybase and Sun through Suns Vendor Integration Program.

Sybase began offering support for clustering in its 12.0 release of ASE. Most recently in a point release to 12.5 in March, Sybase added further enhancements for faster failover and failback, Linden said.
