Sybase and Sun Microsystems Inc. on Wednesday announced that theyll be extending their collaboration to include support for the Solaris operating system on the x64 platform in Sybases Adaptive Server Enterprise database.

Solaris also picks up support in Sybase Inc.s IQ relational database, designed for reporting, data warehousing and analytics, and in Adaptive Server Anywhere.

The two companies will collaborate on joint development and performance engineering in an effort to help customers migrate to cost-effective computing platforms, according to their press release—particularly in the realms of health care, financial services and other key vertical industries.

“Sybase data management solutions on the Solaris 10 OS/x64 platform are excellent alternatives for enterprises seeking scalability and price-performance,” said Herman Li, vice president of engineering for Sybase, in the statement.

“A number of our financial services, government and healthcare customers have expressed interest in a move to x64. Our goal for extending to the x64 platform is to offer customers the widest range of options available for the efficient management and delivery of enterprise data, which is a core component of the unwired enterprise,” Li said.
