In the true spirit of the open-source community, IP Metrics Software Inc. last week launched a version of its vendor-neutral, NIC-based load balancing software for Linux.

The NIC Express for Linux 1.0 trunking software allows network operators to load balance network traffic across two or more network connections into Linux servers. It also allows network operators to increase network throughput and add a level of fault tolerance to networks.

IP Metrics, which last quarter shipped a version of the trunking software for Windows, will extend the reach of its software into the Unix community through a port to Solaris that is due later this year.

NIC Express for Linux 1.0 is available now from the Dallas company for $395 per server. The software works with Version 2.4 or higher of the Linux kernel as well as with any 10/100/1,000M-bps Ethernet NIC (network interface card) and any Layer 2, 3 or 4 switch.
