Axis Communications $499 Axis 70 Network Document Server resembles a low-end version of a multifunction peripheral, but it has essentially one function: Connected to a scanner, it converts paper documents into electronic format and distributes them via e-mail. This obviates the need for fax, mail or courier services, but it probably wont be used heavily in most organizations.

In tests, I used the scanners Auto Document Feeder feature to scan a 15-page document. When the scanner jammed, the server aborted the job. Also, scanned documents are converted only to PDF; in contrast, Axis higher-end model, the $1,085 Axis 7000, can also send TIFF or JPEG files.
