Bidali Softwares BusTrace 2003, to be released next month, is good news for those who must trouble-shoot peripherals that arent functioning properly. BusTrace analyzes I/O activity between PCs and peripherals to isolate problems with most storage devices. When I started such a capture session, BusTrace identified device errors immediately.

Using a built-in database of command definitions, BusTrace can decode Command Descriptor Blocks. Most bus analyzers provide only the raw data or error codes, leaving the deciphering to the technician.

The interface is simple and straightforward, making it easy for even a novice to run a capture session. Results can be exported in the proprietary .btd format or into HTML, an XML spreadsheet or a text file.

BusTrace is compatible with Windows 98 and later versions. Individual licenses for BusTrace 2003 Standard Edition are $699. The Deluxe Edition, which can be used with networked computers, is priced at $999. More information is at www.bustrace.com.
