VMware Inc. is updating its virtual machine technology aimed at departments and software development teams.

VMware, which was bought in December by storage giant EMC Corp., this week announced GSX Server 3, the first major revision of the three-year-old technology in more than one and a half years.

Officials with the Palo Alto, Calif., company said GSX Server 3 includes better performance and management capabilities than the current 2.5 edition. Enhancements include 3.6GB of memory per virtual machine, which will enable users to support larger applications on the virtual servers, officials said.

The new version also supports networked teams via adapter support and SCSI backup devices, and the ability to migrate virtual machine images to VMwares high-end ESX Server virtual machine technology for data centers.

“The migrating step is seamless,” said Michael Mullany, vice president of marketing.

In addition, the new version offers automatic startup and shutdown of the virtual servers and support for the latest Windows, Linux and NetWare operating systems, Mullany said.

GSX Server 3 is available for both Windows and Linux operating systems this month, starting at $2,500 for two-CPU servers.
