Highwall Technologies on March 6 will launch a software package designed to prevent wireless LAN security breaches without a network overlay of hardware sensors.

Highwall Enterprise 4.0 focuses on the end points in a network, detecting rogue access points and unauthorized clients.

“We basically treat wireless devices like a virus,” said Rich Swier, CEO of Highwall in Sarasota, Fla. “This is the equivalent of an anti-virus system for wireless.”

Swier said that while hardware sensors are a good idea for administrators concerned about wireless attacks, many of his customers are more concerned about how wireless devices pose direct threats to their wired networks.

The software finds problems such as rogue access points on the wired network, laptops being used as gateways into the wired network when their users inadvertently leave the radios on, ad hoc networks between two wireless devices, and unauthorized clients on a wireless LAN.

Highwall Enterprise 4.0 comprises the following:

  • Highwall Wired Agent, priced per subnet, which starts at $299 per subnet.
  • Highwall EndPoint Agent, which is installed on users laptops and starts at $45 per laptop.
