Deadline Hit, Missed

Sprint PCS last Monday met the Federal Communications Commission deadline to begin selling wireless phones equipped with technology that allows emergency operators to determine a callers location with greater precision. AT&T Wireless, on the other hand, says it will need until March 2002 to roll out new Enhanced 911 services.

Globespan, Virata Combine Efforts

GlobeSpan says it will swap $587.8 million in stock for Virata. The two will merge to create a $1.3 billion provider of integrated circuits, software and system designs for DSL.

Asia Global Crossing says it has sold a transoceanic optical fiber connection to China Netcom. The company sold about 10 gigabits per second of capacity on four connections between China and Los Angeles, as well as 2.5 Gbps of capacity to China Netcoms network. The deal provides access to Chinas three largest cities.
