Inktomi Corp. is rolling out new software designed to accelerate Web performance on the desktop.

The Foster City, Calif., company also is signing a deal with America Online to fuel adoption of the new technology.

Inktomi on Wednesday announced Inktomi Personal Edge, which extends the companys Internet accelerating Web performance technology to the desktop.

The Personal Edge software optimizes both ends of the delivery pipe, and employs compression technology and desktop caching along with Inktomis Traffic Server to enhance network delivery.

Inktomi officials said their Personal Edge software will boost the speed of delivery of Web pages by as much as 30 percent.

The Inktomi Personal Edge consists of a suite of components. The Personal Edge Agent works with the browser to speed up Web page delivery, while the Personal Edge Page Server works to limit the amount of data transmitted to a user at one time. The Personal Edge Extension links the Inktomi Traffic Server parent cache with other system components.

David Peterschmidt, president and CEO of Inktomi, said the new product “moves the network edge to the end-user desktop” and will enable AOL and other service providers to speed the delivery of Web content to their users.

AOL selected the Inktomi Personal Edge technology to speed up “last mile” delivery of Web content to its users, according to Inktomi.
