With e-mail being the Trojan horse by which most computer viruses enter the system, the danger of infection increases as the amount of e-mail traffic jumps.

McAfee, a division of Network Associates Inc., last week introduced its WebShield e500 anti-virus appliance, a machine that scans large amounts of traffic and protects against not just viruses but also a variety of other mail-borne nuisances.

The e500, which sits at the Internet gateway, can scan more than 120,000 SMTP messages an hour and also scans FTP, Post Office Protocol 3 and HTTP traffic for malicious Java, ActiveX or JavaScript code.

The e500 is available now. Pricing information was unavailable.
