Urban options Creating a new option for IP networking in metropolitan areas, Cisco Systems Inc. next month plans to roll out its ONS 15540 Extended Services Platform for IP routing and optical networking systems. Based on Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology, the system is built for both enterprises and carriers in urban areas. It enables enterprises with demand for high-capacity storage networking solutions to cost-effectively extend their Gigabit Ethernet traffic into metropolitan areas.

Versatile The San Jose, Calif., vendor touts the DWDM systems versatility, scalability and service density, which lets enterprises add applicants as needed. The product contains 12 slots packaged in a 24-inch-tall, rack-mountable chassis and supports numerous networking and storage protocols. The ONS 15540 ESP will roll out in several stages. The list price of a base system starts at $67,000.
