Airport to Use ID Technology

In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Oakland, Calif., International Airport is incorporating facial recognition technology into its security mix.

Police departments in almost three dozen surrounding communities, including the Oakland Police Department, are already using biometric facial recognition technology—called Imagis ID-2000—from Imagis Technologies.

The Oakland department is going to tie the airport into its booking and biometric identification system. The airport installation is part of a $2.65 million contract Imagis has with the Alameda County Sheriffs Department to install this system in area police departments.

Another company, Viisage Technology, used similar technologies during the Super Bowl in January. The move drew sharp criticism from some civil liberties experts.
