Ipswitchs Whatsup Gold 8.0 is a good tool for small offices or large departments at big organizations that need network and device monitoring in an easy-to-use, affordable package.

When I tested WhatsUp Gold 8.0, slated to ship next week for $795, I was impressed with the intuitive interface. IT managers who already use the product will have no trouble mastering the useful features that are tucked into the familiar network discovery methods.

Using the new Selective Discovery, I was able to limit the discovery of my network to only servers or other active devices such as routers. The network maps I created with SmartScan were uncluttered and made setting up my management tasks, such as event log monitoring, much quicker.

WhatsUp Gold 8.0 can gather more information from devices such as Windows-based servers. For the first time, WhatsUp Gold 8.0 can monitor the Windows NT event log and send an alert to the WhatsUp Gold console.
