In the same week that Google pre-announced a new slideshow application, the company acquired Sweden-based Marratech, a maker of e-meeting software.

Marratech’s software is for download instead of browser-based, and users can use text chat, VOIP and video and share applications.

With the acquisition, Google is undoubtedly continuing to target the office market. Not sure why Google chose to acquire a desktop solution versus a browser-based one. The typical difference between the two is that desktop apps have more functionality — but Google has never been a fan of feature bloat. And considering that Google always focuses on “the cloud,” the choice to acquire a desktop app seems a little strange.

Theories, anyone?
