U.S. Department of Defense deployed smart-card ID tags in 1999, but the rest of the U.S. government just recently started to use the technology. NASA recently signed Philips Semiconductors as the sole supplier for its contactless access card program.

Smart-card technology suppliers cited six high-profile projects, related to government-mandated identification programs, that are open for bidding by system integrators with turnkey solutions.
