For storage administrators who desire SAN planning tools, Computer Associates International Inc. acquired the assets of startup Netreon Inc., officials said Tuesday.

SANexec, launched by Mountain View, Calif.-based Netreon in Oct. 2001, helps users plan, configure, and monitor storage-area networks. CA will relaunch the tool as BrightStor SAN Designer next month, said Nigel Turner, senior vice president, storage management, in Islandia, N.Y.

The purchase price was not announced. “This is a really strategic acquisition for CA,” Turner said. “The real value in the technology comes from all the knowledge you get in the library that comes with the product.” That includes data on how to connect, configure SAN infrastructure, and on the needed integration software, he said. “The tool tells you whether this [SAN] is going to work or not,” he said.

When bought from Netreon, users paid about $10,000 for a one-server license; CAs pricing isnt public yet. With next months launch, SANexec will integrate with BrightStors existing asset management, SAN management, and chargeback features, he said. CA will add automatic storage provisioning for Netreon-designed SANs in 3-6 months, he added.

Netreon never announced customers, but “I know they did have some,” Turner said. The companys partnership to develop software for Unisys Corp.s Sentinel suite, though competitive to BrightStor, will continue, officials said.
