EMC Corp. will announce the first of three versions of its sixth-generation Clariion midrange storage system next week, sources said.
Known as the CX600, the product will have four Intel Corp. 2GHz processors, up to 8GB cache, 2G-bit/second Fibre Channel ports and up to 240 disks.
It can be connected as direct-attached storage or in a storage-area network. And by years end, it will be available for connections behind the companys network-attached storage (NAS) systems.
CX600 will be available, as an OEM product, through Arrow Electronics Inc., Avnet Inc., Dell Computer Corp., Fujitsu Technology Solutions Ltd., Fujitsu-Siemens Computers GmbH and Unisys Corp. The product will run existing Clariion add-on software and much of the software for the higher-end Symmetrix hardware, including PowerPath, ControlCenter/Open Edition, StorageScope, ESN Manager and WideSky. Replication and data migration tools will come later this year, sources said.
EMC officials, in Hopkinton, Mass., would not comment on the CX600, which will be announced Monday.
Asked about the new products, Chuck Musciano, vice president and CIO of the American Kennel Club, said he is looking forward to the them. “The incremental improvements to the architecture at least make sense on first blush,” and the capacity improvements are “obviously a win,” said the 8-terabyte Clariion user from Raleigh, N.C. “To have those [Symmetrix] tools available for the Clariion environment is definitely a good solution,” he said.
Later this year, sources said, EMC will announce the CX400, and the CX200 will debut early next year.
CX400 will be 3u form factor, with two processors, 15 drives, up to 60 disks, and with direct-attached or SAN connections but not NAS connections. That amounts to 180 disks per cabinet. CX200 will be similar, but with 30 disks, and it wont support EMCs array-based software, sources said.
CX600 and CX400 replace the current FC4700. CX200 replaces the current FC4500 and FC5300.
