StorageTek Introduces New Midrange Subsystem

Storage Technology Corp. this week announced the D240 subsystem at the Storage Decisions conference in Chicago, Aimed at the midtier enterprise customer, the product is positioned as the next logical step in the companys information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy, which aims to help customers put different types of stored data on appropriately priced storage. Since all of the D-series subsystems are built on a modular architecture, StorageTek said, companies can simply move the D200 disk drives from one subsystem to a larger one as their storage needs grow, without changing the settings.

Fujitsu, Vixel Set Storage Performance Benchmark

Just days after DataCore Software broke the 50,000 I/O operations per second barrier, Fujitsu and Vixel cleared the 60,000 IOPS hurdle. The Fujitsu ETERNUS3000 Model 600M uses Vixels InSpeed SOC (Switch-On-a-Chip) in an SBOD (Switched Bunch Of Disks) application, which gives it high-performance switched connectivity within the drive drawers to each individual drive. Creating a switched back-end architecture using InSpeed in an SBOD configuration provides drive isolation and enhances the performance and reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) characteristics of storage solutions, according to Vixel.

It also automatically detects TCP/IP connectivity whenever workers log in to their companys network. If a backup is scheduled, it retrieves the appropriate data from the connected computer and transmits the updated backup data set to the FSV-M5 specialty server.

Gartner Storage Guru Shares Storage Buying Secrets

At past Storage Decisions conferences, end users gathered to learn why they should buy a storage area network. But now that most users are running SANs, the tone of discussion has turned from the nuts and bolts of storage networking to how customers can put the squeeze on their storage suppliers. Nick Allen, industry analyst and research director for Gartner Inc., kicked off the conference this week by offering advice on providing capacity without overbuying. Topping the list of Allens storage tips was using more than one hardware and software supplier. Allen predicted that in 2004, 50 percent of storage costs will be hardware related and 50 percent will be “other,” meaning software, services and miscellaneous new expenses.
