StorageTek Will Manage Storage Networks Remotely

Storage-network maker Storage Technology Corp., aka StorageTek, said it is launching a unit that aims to free customers from much of the management and monitoring of heterogeneous storage networks. Dubbed Enterprise Support Services, an outsourcer of sorts, the unit will charge a flat fee for its remote-management services. Cost will be based on the specific contracted tasks, as well as on the complexity of a customers infrastructure, the amount of data being juggled, how often its backed up and other factors. John LoPorto, VP of storage solutions at StorageTek, said the plan will “keep the IT managers off the hot seat while the physical gear stays put.”

Brocade Set to Ship SilkWorm Storage Switches

Brocade Communications Systems will soon release its family of SilkWorm Fabric Application Platforms, with seven storage management companies signed up to develop software for the platform. SilkWorm initially will be an eight-port switch that provides a customer-designed ASIC at each of the auto-sensing Gigabit Ethernet or Fibre Channel ports. Martin Wijaya, senior analyst at International Data Corp. said, “Looking at its first joint virtualization software offering for just the 8-port switches, Brocade is trying to attract the lower to medium end of the small and medium-sized market.”

Taiwan CD-R and DVD Disc Makers Post Slight Sales Decrease in February

Taiwan-based CD-R and DVD disc makers Ritek, CMC Magnetics and Prodisc Technology as well as pre-recorded DVD disc manufacturer Infodisc Technology posted slight decreases in February sales, due to fewer working days and the industrys traditional seasonal lows. The manufacturers said they were optimistic about March sales.

SNIA and Fibre Channel Associations Plan European Wedding

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) in Europe merged after months of discussions. The new organization will be called SNIA Europe and retain its current structure, but will add a fibre channel forum and continue the FCIAs role in educating vendors and users on fibre channel issues. The merger will be completed by May.
