Analytic data platforms, marketing applications, and services company provider Teradata is clearly on a big data IP shopping spree to expand its product offerings. The Ohio-based company said Sept. 3 that it has bought its third company in six weeks; this time the acquiree is big data consulting firm Think Big Analytics.

Financial details of the transaction were not released.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Think Big brings to Teradata a globally distributed team of engineers, data architects and data scientists who specialize in several Hadoop distributions, OpenStack and numerous databases, include the NoSQL versions. It also has connections with open-source projects involving Hadoop, such as Hive, Mango, Storm and Spark.

Teradata acquired Revelytix (software that manages Hadoop metadata) and Hadapt (which puts SQL Server on top of Hadoop) in late July. “We’re building out a full-service big data platform of our own to go with our core products and services,” Teradata Vice President of Product and Services Marketing Chris Twogood told eWEEK.

The combination of Teradata’s storage and Think Big’s analytics acumen will enable customers to obtain value from diverse data sets by using effective open source IT along with encumbent software, Ron Bodkin, founder and CEO of Think Big, told eWEEK.

“We also will be providing predictive analytics options as customers require it,” Bodkin said.

Think Big will add about 100 workers to Teradata’s current consulting services headcount of about 5,000. Co-founder and president Rick Farnell will join Teradata in an executive role.
