Seeking to boost sagging sales, Advanced Micro Devices Monday raised the performance of its notebook processors with the release of a mobile Athlon XP 1800+, with a frequency of 1.53GHz.

In conjunction with the release, Hewlett-Packard Co. announced two new consumer products that will feature the chip, the Pavilion ZE1250 notebook, available in U.S. retail stores starting Monday, and the Compaq Presario 900 series, which is expected to be available via direct order at the companys Web site.

The processor, priced at $335 in 1,000-unit quantities, is the first new mobile chip offering since AMD released the mobile Athlon XP 1700+, clocked at 1.47GHz, in April.

The worlds second largest PC chipmaker, which twice warned investors this quarter that its earnings are falling short of projections, is struggling to counter sagging demand and continued price competition from market leader Intel Corp.

Executives at AMD, which will report its earnings Wednesday, earlier this month blamed the revenue shortfall on lack of an expected pickup in back-to-school sales and continued weakness in overall PC sales worldwide.
