For frequent international business travelers, Sprint this week announced it will offer a handset from Samsung Electronics Co. that works on both its CDMA networks in the United States and on GSM networks in other countries.

The Sprint PCS International IP-A790 phone, when used with a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card, lets users make calls on Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks in more than 130 countries where Sprint has roaming agreements, according to officials with Sprint, in Overland Park, Kan.

The IP-A790 will be available in March for $550.

Sprint is also providing flat-rate pricing along with the new phone. For users traveling in countries where it has roaming agreements, Sprint will charge $1.50 per minute to make or receive calls, including long-distance.

Sprint, like Verizon Wireless, uses Code Division Multiple Access (CMDA) technologies, while GSM is more prevalent in the rest of the world.

Verizon also offers Samsungs A790 handset for its customers.
